1. 2 Confirmed Legionnaires' Disease Cases Linked To Pool Area At Evanston Hotel (patch.com) — Evanston health officials have linked two cases of Legionnaires' disease to the pool and hot tub area at the Hilton Garden Inn North Shore/Evanston on Maple Avenue, prompting a full closure and state-led remediation. Tests found Legionella bacteria in the hot tub water system, and guests who recently visited and now have pneumonia-like symptoms are urged to contact their medical providers. The rest of the hotel's water system tested clear, but the spa area will remain shut until remediation is complete.

The audit, prompted by former Superintendent Devon Horton's federal indictment, comes as the board prepares a $20 million budget-cut plan and potential school closures that will shape the district's financial future.
   

4. Evanston/Skokie School District 65 weighs $20M in cuts, 2 more school closures amid financial crisis (abc7chicago.com) — Evanston/Skokie District 65 is preparing $20 million in budget cuts for 2028 that could close at least two more schools, redraw boundaries, and eliminate staff positions across Evanston. Administrators cite years of deficits, declining enrollment, and underused buildings, and are outlining options in community meetings this week before presenting a detailed proposal to the school board on Oct. 13.
   

5. Evanston Community Fridges opens first pantry in downtown Evanston (dailynorthwestern.com) — A new community pantry has just opened in downtown Evanston, tucked between the Woman's Club and the Evanston Public Library, offering free nonperishables and refrigerated items to anyone in need. Run by Evanston Community Fridges and the Woman's Club, it's part of a growing mutual-aid network feeding hundreds of residents, from unhoused neighbors to seniors and students, each month.
