1. Outdoor dining fees could be cut dramatically (evanstonnow.com) — Evanston's Economic Development Committee has endorsed cutting outdoor dining fees roughly in half, a move that could make sidewalk seating far more affordable for local restaurants. The proposal, now headed to City Council, would reduce many permits from thousands of dollars to flat fees as low as $175, trading about $20,000 in city revenue for a hoped-for boost in business and downtown vibrancy.
   

2. ETHS flag football: Defense rests in flag loss to unbeaten Glenbrook South (evanstonroundtable.com) — Evanston's flag football team saw its eight-game winning streak snapped in a 38-6 loss to unbeaten Glenbrook South at Lazier Field, dimming its Central Suburban League title hopes. Playing without two key defenders, the Kits struggled with missed flag pulls but still have two regular-season games left, including a home matchup against top-ranked Willowbrook.
   

3. Skokie park project relies on MWRD land lease (evanstonnow.com) — A major $53 million park proposal along the Evanston-Skokie border could bring new playgrounds, trails, concerts and better North Shore Channel access just a short walk from James Park neighborhoods. While Skokie taxpayers would fund it, nearby Evanston residents would gain a destination park, bike trail connection and summer programming if voters approve the November bond referendum.
   

4. NU adjuncts and faculty without tenure move to unionize (evanstonroundtable.com) — Northwestern's non-tenure and adjunct faculty have launched a unionization effort, drawing visible support from Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss and local NAACP leadership at a campus rally. Organizers say a new union could improve job security and wages for hundreds of instructors, and are now awaiting the University's response to their request for voluntary recognition.
   

5. Evanston wind phone at Canal Shores Golf Course helps grieving people connect with lost loved ones (cbsnews.com) — A unique "wind phone" tucked off the 11th hole at Canal Shores Golf Course in Evanston offers residents a quiet place to speak to loved ones they've lost. Created by local therapist and author Mary Leopold, the disconnected British-style phone booth is surrounded by painted memorial rocks and has quickly become a meaningful grief-support spot for golfers and neighbors alike.
