Keep Dogs Out Of Water: DuPage Forest Preserve District Warns Of Harmful Algal Bloom

GLEN ELLYN, IL — An active algal bloom is prompting the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County to urge visitors to keep their dogs out of the water at East Branch Forest Preserve.

The algal bloom was confirmed at the off-leash area of the preserve on Monday.

While these blooms happen naturally, they can be toxic for pets, children and people with compromised immune systems if inhaled or ingested.

Forest preserve officials say the bloom can resemble brown, blue or green paint on the water's surface.

If you see an algal bloom:

• Do not touch the water or the bloom
• Keep pets and kids out of the water
• Immediately wash skin or fur that has contacted the water

Warning signs will be posted until the bloom is gone, the forest preserve district said.
