Lucas 40th Anniversary Celebration

Step back into 1986 as Downtown Glen Ellyn celebrates 40 years of Lucas, the hometown film that turned our streets into a movie set!

Downtown Glen Ellyn is marking a meaningful milestone this spring: the 40th anniversary of Lucas, the 1986 film that briefly turned the village into a Hollywood set and left behind a legacy of local pride. To honor that moment in community history, the Glen Art Theatre—where the movie premiered four decades ago—will host a week‑long celebration from March 19 to March 26, inviting residents to revisit the film in the very place it first lit up the screen.

The event opens on Glenbard West Day with a special $3.50 ticket price and the debut of a full‑length documentary created by Glenbard West journalism students. Their film gathers memories from community members and former students who appeared as extras, weaving together personal stories with archival news footage from the original 1986 premiere. For the rest of the week, audiences will enjoy a five‑minute preview of the documentary before each screening, with the full version soon available on The Glen Bard student newspaper website.

Inside the theatre lobby, visitors will find a curated display of memorabilia and newspaper clippings from the Glen Ellyn Historical Society, alongside a creative re‑imagining of the film’s local shooting locations crafted by current Glenbard West students. The exhibit offers a vivid reminder of how familiar streets, storefronts, and school hallways became part of a story that still resonates.

At the heart of the celebration is Lucas itself—a tender coming‑of‑age film about a bright, awkward teen navigating friendship, first love, and the desire to belong. Its themes remain timeless, and its Glen Ellyn roots make its return especially poignant.

This anniversary tribute is the result of a true community partnership, supported by Glenbard West High School, the Glen Ellyn Historical Society, the Glen Ellyn Public Library, and the Glen Art Theatre, which is celebrating its own 100‑year milestone. Together, they’ve created a celebration that honors both the film and the village that helped bring it to life.
