School Canceled Friday At Glenbrook South Following Fire: District

According to the district, the accidental fire began in the wood shop classroom at GBS and an alarm was activated.

GLENVIEW, IL — Glenbrook South remained closed Thursday night and school is canceled for Friday following a late afternoon fire at the campus. Glenbrook High School District 225 said no one is allowed to collect their belongings at this time and anyone that comes to the GBS building will be turned away.

Neighboring Glenbrook North will remain open and students in the Academy program will not travel to GBS, according to a letter sent to the GBS community.

The Glenview Fire Department responded to a call of a reported fire at 3:05 p.m. Thursday at GBS's wood shop. By 3:22, the fire was deemed under control. There were no injuries, and no students, GBS staff or emergency personnel were taken to the hospital, according to officials.

Glenview was assisted by Niles, North Main, Morton Grove, Elk Grove and Skokie fire departments. The last company left the scene at 6:11 p.m. Officials said no other parts of the building were damaged by the fire, which is believed to be accidental, but remains under investigation.

The district said Thursday night there will be no homework due until classes resume at GBS. Students who are participating in AP testing will have their exams rescheduled.

All home athletic events were canceled Thursday evening. Officials urged drivers to avoid the area. In a series of social media posts, posted shortly after 3:30 p.m., the school said traffic in and out of the school was restricted.

The school had all students requiring bus services report to the stadium parking lot for pick-up. Students walking/being picked up were free to leave campus. The social media post continued that the building would be locked until cleared by the fire department. All items will remain where students left them.

In subsequent posts at around 4 p.m., GBS said buses will be departing campus shortly.

School officials initially said all home athletic games scheduled before 6 p.m. were canceled but issued an update just before 5 p.m. saying all home athletic events were canceled. A band concert scheduled for Thursday night was canceled.
