CLARENDON HILLS, IL – Clarendon Hills voters on Tuesday rejected a measure to do away with the office of elected clerk.

In the election, 63 percent of voters voted against it, 2,094 votes to 1,237, according to unofficial results.

Had it passed, the measure would have taken effect when the term of the current clerk, Lynn Dragisic, expired next May.

Under the ballot measure, the village president would have received the power to appoint the clerk, with the Village Board's approval.

The results were similar Tuesday in Lake County's Wauconda, where 64 percent of voters opposed such a measure.

Village clerks maintain public records, answer public records requests and take meeting minutes, among other things.

As with many towns, the Clarendon Hills clerk is part time, making $5,000 a year. Like elsewhere, full-time employees handle many of the responsibilities.
