Jefferson Street Water Main Work to Begin October 12: City Of Joliet Reveals What's Expected (patch.com) — Starting Monday, October 12, Jefferson Street in Joliet will be reduced to one lane between Clement and Center while a new water main is installed, and Nicholson Street will close to thru traffic between Jefferson and Oneida. Work is expected to wrap up by Friday, October 16, and drivers are urged to use alternate routes and slow down in the construction zone. Questions can go to the city's Public Utilities Department.
   

2. Going Twice The Speed Limit, Joliet Driver Vowed To Kill State Police Trooper Who Stopped Him: Complaint (patch.com) — A 27-year-old Joliet resident is charged with felony threatening a public official and reckless driving after allegedly speeding at 98 mph through an I-80 construction zone by Richards Street and vowing to kill an Illinois State Police trooper. A judge allowed him pretrial release under the SAFE-T Act, with strict orders to avoid contact with the trooper outside his official duties.
   

3. Explore the Historic Old Joliet Prison by flashlight this October (thelansingjournal.org) — Joliet's Old Joliet Prison is opening for nighttime flashlight tours every Thursday through Saturday evening in October, giving locals a spooky way to explore the historic site. Tickets can be bought at the gate or reserved online, with discounted Thursday pricing and free parking nearby. Daytime tours continue all week, and proceeds support the Joliet Area Historical Museum.
   

4. Joliet needs a Christmas tree for City Square; nominations are open (shawlocal.com) — Joliet is looking for a large Norway spruce or fir to become this year's official City Square Christmas tree, and residents can nominate their own trees by email through October 31. The chosen donor gets free tree removal and a special invite to the November 27 lighting ceremony downtown. Requirements, photos, and contact details are clearly laid out for anyone interested.
   

5. Local Announcement: Manteno Veterans Home Needs Donations - Drop Off in Joliet or New Lenox Until October 26, 2026 (patch.com) — Joliet residents can support veterans at the Manteno Veterans Home by dropping off wish-list donations at the Stone City VFW on Stone City Drive now through October 26. New Lenox American Legion is also collecting items, which will be delivered together on October 27. Contact information is provided for anyone near Manteno who prefers to donate directly.
