New Lenox Resident Targeted In Inheritance Scam Via Messaging App: New Lenox PD

A New Lenox resident reported the scam to police on Jan. 28.

NEW LENOX, IL — A New Lenox resident was targeted by a woman on a social messaging app, in a scam involving a purported inheritance, according to New Lenox police reports.

Police were called Jan. 28 to the 700 block of Tauber Road, for a deceptive practices complaint. The victim told police that they had messaged with a woman reportedly from Texas, via a messaging app called Zangi, according to police reports.

The woman told the person that she received a $10,000 check and a $5,000 check as inheritance. She stated she did not have a bank account and requested that the complainant cash the checks and transfer the funds to her. The resident then deposited the checks and transferred the funds.

The checks were later returned, and the victim's account had a draft of $15,000 to cover the amount.

The incident is under review for further investigation or case closure.
