The musical is based on the popular books originally written by Eric Litwin and illustrated by James Dean. With a script and lyrics by Sarah Hammond and music by Will Aronson, the show draws from the books' characters rather than adapting one particular volume.

"The musical features an original storyline where Pete the Cat moves in with the Biddle family for the summer and helps young Jimmy Biddle overcome a creative block in second-grade art class on a globe-trotting trip to Paris in a VW bus," Visual and Performing Arts Manager Drew Kambach told the district. "It's full of fun, jazzy music."
