The fire was largely extinguished, but a natural gas line continued to burn, according to a news release. Nicor responded with a dig crew and was able to clamp off the gas supply, allowing fire crews to safely continue, the release said.

After initial reports that two people were unaccounted for after the blast, two people were found dead during "an extensive and methodical search of the debris." The Kendall County Coroner's Office responded to the scene Thursday night, fire officials said. No additional information has been released on the victims.

Multiple fire departments assisted at the scene and with fire station coverage, including Aurora, Aurora Township, Plainfield, Montgomery, Sugar Grove, Naperville and Bolingbrook, along with Oswego police and the Kendall County Sheriff's Office.

The exact cause of the blast has not yet been determined, and it remains under investigation. Early Thursday evening, Oswego police said preliminary reports indicated a gas leak and explosion. Oswego fire officials said the fire protection district is being assisted by the Illinois State Fire Marshal's office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and MABAS Division 15 Fire Investigators.

"Fire crews remained on scene for an extended period due to the unstable condition of the structure and to assist with the investigation and scene safety," the fire protection district said.

Fox Chase Drive North was shut down for hours after the incident, with police asking residents to avoid the area.
