Kathleen M. (nee Doolin) Weiss

Kathleen M. (nee Doolin) Weiss, 79, of Crest Hill, IL, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away suddenly on Monday, August 10, 2026, at St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. She was born on August 23, 1946, to the late Patrick and Alice (nee Adelmann) Doolin.

Kathy grew up in Lockport, IL, attending Lockport Grade Schools and St. Francis Academy in Joliet. She attended the College of St. Francis, where she received a B.A. in Speech. While at St. Francis, she met her future husband Nicholas, originally from St. Louis, MO. In July of 1968, Kathy and Nick married and were blessed with over 56 years of marriage together until Nick passed away in February of 2025. After college, Kathy started her career as an English and Theatre teacher at Plainfield High School, and after being a stay-at-home mom to her two sons, she moved on to retail.

While working at Printer’s Ink at the old Jefferson Square Mall in Joliet, Kathy started a collection of Precious Moments, Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments, and holiday decorations. Kathy’s favorite holiday was Christmas. She proudly decorated over 20 Christmas trees of various sizes and had an entire town of Snow Village buildings, figures, and scenery. It brought her great joy that she was able to later share the same decorations with her grandchildren that she shared with her sons.

Kathy was most proud of the life and family that she and her husband Nick made together. Kathy was never a sports fan growing up, but once her boys started playing baseball and soccer, she never missed any of their games and would often be found watching late night Cubs and White Sox games by herself. Once her eight grandchildren started playing sports and having various school events, Kathy and Nick would do whatever they could to attend them all, often going to multiple events on the same day. Over the last four years she became an avid fan of the University of Iowa football and basketball teams, eventually becoming even more invested than her own granddaughter who went there.

Kathy is survived by her loving sons, Nick (Brandy) Weiss and Jeff (Danielle) Weiss; eight grandchildren, Owen (Erin), Naomi, Jack, Mickey, Gianna, Ben, Abigail and Lauren Weiss; brothers, Bill (Gail) Doolin and Mike (Cathy) Doolin; brother-in-law, Ernest (Lena) McGrath Jr.; several nieces and nephews; and best friends, Fred and Diane Hafner.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Nick; parents, Patrick and Alice Doolin; in-laws Ernest and Melba McGrath; brother, Pat Doolin; sister, Mary Ellen Ricketts; and sister-in-law, Marion (nee McGrath) Walters.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lightways Hospice and Serious Illness Careand St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital.

Visitation for Kathleen Weiss will be held on Monday, August 17, 2026, at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Rd., Joliet, IL, from 3:00 p.m. until the time of Memorial Services at 6:00 p.m. As it was her request, cremation rites have been accorded.
