📰 News we're reading

1. Springfield park could get upgrades after alleged arson (sj-r.com) — A Springfield east-side park may get a new playground, sport court, and parking lot if a $200,000 state grant — matched by the Springfield Park District — is approved. Following an alleged arson that destroyed a key play structure, officials are finalizing plans now and expect a funding decision this winter, with construction targeted for summer 2027.

2. Sonya Massey Case: What Happened, and Where It Stands Now (snjtoday.com) — A high‑profile Springfield‑area case has taken a new turn with the prison death of former Sangamon County deputy Sean Grayson, convicted of second‑degree murder in the 2024 killing of Sonya Massey near Springfield. Massey was shot after calling 911 and later died at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, leading to a $10 million county settlement and the statewide Sonya Massey Act tightening police hiring background checks. Her family says the loss still overshadows every legal outcome.

3. Results announced for State Fair's Master Showmanship competition (agrinews-pubs.com) — A major 4-H milestone just wrapped up at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, where 66 young exhibitors from across Illinois competed in the Master Showmanship contest. Toby Behrends of Bureau County earned Grand Champion, with top prizes, gift cards, and gear awarded across beef, swine, and sheep divisions. The event marked the 26th year of this signature Springfield fair tradition.

4. Complete high school football coverage for 2026 around Springfield (sj-r.com) — Springfield-area high school football fans get one-stop access to 2026 season coverage, from game recaps and photo galleries to preseason rankings and predictions. The roundup highlights Springfield High, Glenwood, SHG and other nearby programs, plus a full area schedule and player spotlights to follow all fall.

5. Illinois agrees to temporary order pausing assisted suicide law for certain hospitals, doctors (wcia.com) — Illinois has agreed to a temporary federal court order pausing enforcement of the new assisted suicide law for certain Catholic hospitals, four doctors, and facilities under the Diocese of Springfield. The shield remains while courts weigh broader challenges to the law and related conscience protections, leaving Springfield-linked providers exempt for now when the statute takes effect Sept. 12.
