• Ill. grants fund equipment purchases for fire, EMS agencies (firerescue1.com) — Virden Fire Protection District is receiving $25,095 from Illinois’ Small Equipment Grant Program, helping buy needed firefighting gear. The grant is part of $6 million awarded statewide to fire and EMS agencies, including several other departments in Macoupin and nearby counties.

• Newspapers in Girard, Virden, Palmyra last issues were June 3 (enquirerdemocrat.com) — Residents in Virden just lost their hometown newspaper, the Virden Recorder, as part of a shutdown that also ended papers in Girard and Palmyra on June 3. The chain’s owner cited rising costs for gas, paper and other materials, and says details on subscription refunds will be shared with readers soon.
