Wheaton Community Rallies for a Cause at Third Annual Ducky Dash 5K

WHEATON, IL — This May, as communities across the country observe Neurofibromatosis (NF) Awareness Month, a local event is bringing that mission close to home. On May 16, residents will gather at Herrick Lake for the third annual Ducky Dash 5K—an uplifting, family-friendly race that blends fun with purpose while supporting individuals and families affected by NF.

What began as a simple idea has grown into a meaningful community tradition. The event traces its roots back three years, when NF Network staff connected with local runner Tim Gross. Living with NF2-related schwannomatosis, Tim’s journey has been anything but easy. After a tumor caused him to lose his hearing, he faced the isolation and uncertainty that often follow such a diagnosis. Running became his way forward—a way to reconnect with himself and the world around him. Today, he continues to race both locally and nationally, inspiring others with his determination.

That same spirit is at the heart of the Ducky Dash 5K.

Participants will take on a four-loop course around scenic Herrick Lake, with options to run, walk, or simply cheer from the sidelines. The event welcomes all ages and ability levels, making it a true community gathering. Adding to the lighthearted atmosphere, attendees are encouraged to come dressed in duck-themed attire—anything from full inflatable costumes to creative homemade outfits. Prizes will be awarded for the most imaginative looks.

Beyond the race itself, the event offers a full lineup of activities. Families can enjoy duck-themed games, an awards ceremony, complimentary stretching sessions, and a silent auction. Top fundraisers will also be recognized for their efforts in supporting the NF community.

Neurofibromatosis affects approximately 1 in every 2,500 births, yet it remains widely misunderstood. Local events like the Ducky Dash 5K help change that by raising both awareness and critical funds for research and support programs.
