• Off-duty Gary firefighter faces several felony charges after striking ISP trooper, fleeing scene (wgntv.com) — An off-duty Gary firefighter from Gary has been arrested after allegedly driving drunk, hitting an Indiana State Police trooper's vehicle on I‑65, and fleeing before finally stopping near a Gary fire station. The trooper suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and prosecutors are reviewing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges tied to reckless driving, OWI, and leaving the scene of the crash. 
• Business briefs: Aug. 11 storm relief efforts continue (chicagotribune.com) — Residents in Gary and across Northwest Indiana can still seek financial help for August storm damage through Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Gary, which is supporting households with repairs, food loss, and other needs. INDOT is also hosting a winter hiring event Oct. 6 at its Gary Subdistrict office, offering seasonal highway and snowplow jobs with competitive hourly pay and no preregistration required.
