📰 News we're reading

1. Why this Indianapolis agency is paying people to become EMTs (mirrorindy.org) — Indianapolis EMS is tackling its EMT shortage by paying trainees $19 an hour during a 10‑week program that leads directly to full‑time city jobs. Local residents from recent grads to career changers get classroom instruction, ride‑alongs, and a path toward higher‑paying paramedic roles, with potential tuition support after six months. Graduates say the program opened doors to meaningful, fast‑paced medical careers.

2. People find more than just logs in White River debris (fox59.com) — If you're heading near the White River in Indianapolis, expect lingering flood debris, including a major logjam with a boat stuck near Broad Ripple by the Monon Trail. Friends of the White River and city crews are assessing damage and cleanup needs as recreation slowly resumes upstream and downstream, with advocates insisting the river's health is rebounding.

3. Volunteers help rebuild 93-year-old man's flood-destroyed home (wishtv.com) — In Indianapolis' Ravenswood neighborhood, national volunteers with Samaritan's Purse are tearing out walls, removing debris, and treating mold in homes gutted by recent flooding, including that of 93‑year‑old longtime resident George Hibbard. Crews have already logged more than 800 hours on 92 work orders, carefully preserving sentimental items while preparing houses for contractors. Organizers say they urgently need more volunteers to keep Central Indiana's recovery moving.

4. Benefit concert at The Vogue to support Broad Ripple flood recovery (wrtv.com) — Indianapolis artists and businesses are teaming up Friday night at The Vogue to raise money for Broad Ripple and nearby neighborhoods still cleaning up from recent flooding. Proceeds from tickets, select bar sales, and sponsorships will go to the Broad Ripple Village Association, which will distribute aid to affected residents. Organizers say the concert also aims to remind neighbors they're not facing recovery alone.

5. Indiana in-state tuition freeze continues for second year (journalgazette.net) — Indianapolis students at IU Indianapolis, Purdue Indianapolis, and Ivy Tech will see in‑state tuition and mandatory fees frozen again this year under a statewide two‑year freeze. All 15 public institutions agreed to keep 2024‑25 rates through 2026‑27, though room, board, and some non‑resident costs can still rise as state reserves grow.
