📰 News we're reading

1. Man Set to Plead Guilty in 2023 Drunk Driving Crash in Indy (wibc.com) — A Marion County judge will soon decide whether to accept a plea deal for 42-year-old Bradley Woods, who plans to plead guilty to three felonies in a 2023 fatal drunk-driving crash in Indianapolis. The agreement would cap his prison time at 10 years, dismiss 18 other charges, require restitution, and suspend his license for three years after release.

2. $15.1 million townhome project opens for lower-income households (wishtv.com) — Indianapolis has opened the Bridges Townhomes at Sherman Park on the Near Eastside, adding 43 units for lower-income households and families transitioning out of homelessness. With rents around $1,000–$1,260 and income limits tied to Marion County's median, the $15.1 million project is backed by city land donations, federal relief funds, tax breaks, and state housing support.

3. White River recreational businesses reopen after flooding (wishtv.com) — Access to the White River around Indianapolis is reopening after mid-August's historic flooding, and Hamilton County has lifted its travel ban so kayaking and canoeing can safely resume. Local outfitter Frank's Paddlesports Livery is back in business after a costly closure, while still helping with cleanup and fundraising for flood victims, though officials warn paddlers to watch for lingering debris.

4. High heat adds another obstacle to Indianapolis flood recovery (wrtv.com) — Indianapolis residents still rebuilding from last month's historic flooding are now battling the hottest day of 2026 so far, with mid-90s temperatures slowing cleanup. In the Ravenswood neighborhood, homeowners without working air conditioning and volunteers from Samaritan's Purse are pushing through exhausting heat to clear damaged homes and make them livable again.

5. New: Rolls-Royce Completes $1 Billion Indiana Defense Engine Expansion (redstate.com) — Rolls-Royce has completed a $1 billion upgrade to its Indianapolis jet engine campus, where it will build F130 engines for the Air Force's B-52 fleet through at least 2035. The expansion cements Indianapolis as the company's top global defense engine hub, supporting more than 3,500 jobs and likely adding more positions as new test cells and facilities come online.
