The open-admission city shelter continues taking in animals from across Cedar Rapids while working to improve operations. Residents can visit the Washington View Parkway facility or check online listings to help.

Cedar Rapids Museum of Art announces free admission July 1 to Aug. 30 for all visitors (cbs2iowa.com) — Free admission is coming to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art from July 1 through August 30, giving residents a no-cost way to explore major Grant Wood works and other exhibitions. Cedar Rapids school district names two new members to superintendent's Executive Cabinet (kcrg.com) — Two new leaders are joining the Cedar Rapids Community School District’s superintendent Executive Cabinet on July 1, shaping how local schools support student learning. Nicole Brown will serve as Chief of Learning, while Stephanie Van Hemert becomes Area 1 Chief of Schools, Special Services, and Early Learning. District leaders say both were chosen for strong student-focused experience.
   

4. Proposed Morgan Valley power plant sparks concern at county address (cbs2iowa.com) — Linn County’s board chair is raising alarms about a large natural gas power plant proposed just west of Cedar Rapids, warning it could emit over 100 tons of pollutants a year and heavily affect nearby communities. As Alliant’s Morgan Valley Energy Center advances, she’s pushing for stronger pollution controls, more transparency, and real public input, especially with growth driven by data centers.
   

5. Cedar Rapids meth distributor who led police on high-speed pursuit sentenced to 20 years in prison (kcrg.com) — A Cedar Rapids man has been sentenced to more than 20 years in federal prison after leading officers on a 2024 high‑speed motorcycle chase that reached over 100 mph and cut through a schoolyard. Prosecutors said he was caught with a backpack containing 132 pounds of meth and had previously admitted to distributing the drug in 2023 and 2024.
