• New study finds elevated nitrate levels in Eastern Iowa tap water (cbs2iowa.com) — Cedar Falls tap water showed nitrate levels below federal limits but sometimes above newer health-risk thresholds in a recent multi-city study, with big differences between neighborhoods depending on which wells supply them. Researchers, led by a former Cedar Falls council member, say utilities meet current rules but urge more detailed public reporting and stronger action from local leaders to reduce long-term exposure risks.
• Waterloo Man Sentenced for Making Machineguns (crweworld.com) — A Waterloo man has been sentenced to just over a year in federal prison for converting firearms into illegal machineguns, in a case investigated by a task force that included the Cedar Falls Police Department. Agents found multiple converted weapons and a machinegun conversion device in his home, and prosecutors tied the case to a broader federal violent-crime initiative.
