Medical Center Breaks Ground for Phase II of Hospital Expansion – 95.1 The Bull (951thebull.com) — Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City has broken ground on Phase II of its major expansion, adding new operating rooms, a cafeteria, and support areas that will affect local healthcare access for years. Leaders credit the Charles City community and local banks for helping finance the $40.5 million project, which is expected to finish between late 2028 and early 2029.
   

2. Charles City Council to Consider First Reading of E-Bike Ordinance (kchanews.com) — Charles City residents may soon see new rules for e-bikes and other personal transport vehicles, with the council set to hold the first reading of a proposed ordinance addressing age limits, helmets, trail speeds, and downtown restrictions. The same meeting will also feature a final vote on allowing urban chickens within city limits, potentially changing what’s allowed in your backyard.

Judy Ann Merfeld, 85 of Nashua (kchanews.com) — Nashua resident Judy Ann Merfeld will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City following a Wednesday morning Mass at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Nashua. Family, friends, and neighbors are invited to visitation Tuesday evening and again before the service to honor her long life and support her loved ones.

Gary Arickx, 75, of Nora Springs (kchanews.com) — Services for Nora Springs resident Gary Arickx will be held this week in Charles City, with visitation Thursday evening at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home and a Friday morning Mass at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Friends and neighbors are invited to remember his Navy service, decades of masonry work, and deep involvement in recovery and veterans’ communities.
   

5. Mason City driver extricated after violent Highway 18 head-on crash sends pickup into ditch in flames (northiowatoday.com) — Emergency crews from Charles City helped respond after a violent head-on crash on Highway 18 sent two drivers to the hospital, with one truck ending up in flames. The report also recalls a Charles City bicyclist seriously injured in a separate Floyd County crash this summer, underscoring a troubling year for serious accidents in the area.
