📰 News we're reading
• CenturyLink not ending landline service in Lee County — yet (mississippivalleypublishing.com) — CenturyLink is shutting off traditional landline phone service in Johnston and many other Iowa communities starting October 18, pushing customers toward newer options like Connected Voice with Air-Line and wireless or cable-based phone service. The company says only a small share of Iowans still rely solely on copper lines and promises alternatives that support 911 and medical alert devices, though residents will need to plan for this transition.

• Iowa Corn Growers Welcome Diesel Fuel Price Relief (morningagclips.com) — Johnston farmers are at the center of new diesel fuel tax relief that aims to ease high costs as harvest ramps up across Iowa. Federal and state leaders are temporarily allowing expanded use of off-road diesel for on-road harvest work, which farm groups say will help margins during an uncertain ag economy and complement a new national seed security initiative.

• Joe Mitchell, Lindsay James spar in Second Congressional District debate (kcrg.com) — A high-profile Second Congressional District debate was held in Johnston, where Democrat Lindsay James and Republican Joe Mitchell clashed over tariffs, taxes, federal deficits, and term limits. The candidates sparred over Trump-era trade policies, a proposed Lee County steel mill, and how to rein in federal spending, giving Johnston viewers a front-row seat to a race that could shape Iowa's representation in Congress.
