Mason City council approves native landscape rules, tech to fight those misusing recycling (kgloam.com) — Mason City's council has finalized new rules limiting native landscapes to half of any yard and clarifying how complaints about overgrown vegetation will be handled. The city also approved camera and routing technology for sanitation trucks to identify residents misusing recycling bins, aiming to cut contamination costs and keep more materials out of the landfill.
   

2. One of two charged in Mason City convenience store shooting enters Alford plea (kgloam.com) — A Mason City shooting case tied to a Kwik Star parking lot is moving forward, with one defendant entering an Alford plea to two felony charges and facing up to 10 years in prison. The second man has already pleaded guilty to related charges and will be sentenced later this month, with both hearings set in Cerro Gordo County District Court.
   

3. Smoke alarms, escape plans are things you should review during Fire Prevention Week (kgloam.com) — Mason City firefighters are using Fire Prevention Week to urge residents to check smoke alarms, practice home escape plans, and stay attentive while cooking. They stress that you should never hesitate to call 911 about suspicious odors or possible fires, and invite families to an open house at the fire station this Sunday from noon to 3 p.m.
   

4. Robbins' 3 touchdowns helps Newman get homecoming win (clreporter.com) — Newman Catholic fans in Mason City just watched running back Max Robbins power the Knights to a 41‑16 homecoming win over BCLUW with more than 200 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Thomas McGuire added two scoring passes to Westly Cole as Newman improved to 4‑2 and now prepares to host winless Lake Mills in Friday's home finale.
   

5. Iowa DNR to stock 1,500 trout at 20 spots starting Oct. 23 (kimt.com) — Mason City anglers can look forward to rainbow trout being stocked at Blue Pit on Nov. 24 at 11 a.m., part of the Iowa DNR's fall community trout program. About 1,500 trout will be released at 20 locations statewide starting Oct. 23, with simple gear and a trout fee all you need to join the fun.
