• Here's what to know as another year brings another watering ban (desmoinesregister.com subscription) — Polk City residents are again barred from watering their lawns this summer as Central Iowa Water Works battles high nitrate levels that strain treatment capacity. Drinking water remains safe, but the ban covers most routine lawn irrigation while allowing limited watering for new sod, trees, gardens, golf courses and sports fields. Officials urge extra conservation at home until nitrate levels fall enough to ease restrictions.
