Elementary Teacher Nominated for Kansas Horizon Award (westernkansasnews.com) — A Garden City first grade teacher at Abe Hubert Elementary, Addyson Bjurstrom, has been chosen as USD 457’s nominee for the statewide Kansas Horizon Award recognizing outstanding early‑career educators. She’ll be honored at an upcoming Board of Education meeting, while continuing to build a fun, engaging classroom for her young Garden City students and representing the district at the 2027 KEEN Conference. 
2. GCCC, Triple Oak Power partner to expand construction and electrical education (ksn.com) — Garden City Community College will receive up to $3.75 million over 30 years through a new partnership with Triple Oak Power, supporting construction and electrical technology programs. The deal, tied to the proposed Home Range Clean Power project in Finney and Kearny counties, will fund scholarships for local students, a faculty position, and upgraded training equipment right on the Garden City campus.
3. City manager of Garden City to retire after 18 years in role (ksn.com) — Garden City’s longtime city manager Matt Allen plans to retire in early 2027, and city commissioners have already approved hiring a search firm to find his replacement. Allen, who grew up in Garden City and has served the city for 25 years, reflected on his relationships with staff, officials, and residents as the community prepares for a leadership transition at City Hall.
4. Call to action: Gov. Kelly addresses meatpacking workers affected by ICE raids (kmaj1440.com) — Recent ICE raids that included Garden City meatpacking plants are still disrupting local workers and the broader southwest Kansas economy, according to Gov. Laura Kelly. At a Dodge City town hall, she urged residents to use their political power to influence federal immigration enforcement while union leaders warned the plant shutdowns could affect beef supplies nationwide.
