North Lawrence study consultants look at possibilities for a grocery store, food truck park, traffic calming and more (ljworld.com) — City-hired consultants are sketching out big possibilities for North Lawrence, from a small grocery-anchored mixed-use project near the turnpike to a food truck park and denser housing by the levee and Johnny’s Tavern. Their corridor study also explores traffic calming on North Second/Third, potential new bridges, and future uses for the Riverfront building. Neighbors will get to weigh in at a July 8 open house.

2. To honor public servants, Lawrence's July 4 celebration will have a whole gallery of their photos on display; submissions open now (ljworld.com) — Lawrence’s July 4 Summerfest at the Douglas County Fairgrounds will feature a new Public Servants Past & Present Tribute Gallery, and residents can submit photos of Douglas County public servants by June 20. The free celebration will also include historical exhibits from the Watkins Museum, food vendors, live music and a drone show, with hopes the gallery grows in future years.

3. NOAA confirms EF0 tornado touched down in North Lawrence (prismnews.com) — An EF0 tornado has been officially confirmed in North Lawrence, carving a tight but damaging path between Walnut and Maple streets and toppling mature trees and branches. Residents in the affected blocks are urged to inspect roofs, fences, utilities and vehicles for hidden damage. The brief twister was part of a larger severe-weather outbreak that brought heavy rain, power line damage and water rescues across the Lawrence area.

4. KU Department of Mathematics announces 2026 spring awards (ku.edu) — In Lawrence, KU’s Department of Mathematics has honored dozens of students and faculty with scholarships and teaching awards for the 2026 spring cycle. Local and regional undergraduates earned major recognitions like the R.D. Brown Award, while graduate students received support through several endowed funds. Multiple professors were also singled out for outstanding teaching in advanced mathematics courses.

5. Dedication honors people buried in Potter's Field, etching Black Lawrence history into granite markers (lawrencekstimes.com) — Lawrence residents just helped dedicate new granite markers at Oak Hill Cemetery, finally naming 30 Black people — including 1882 lynching victims — long buried in unmarked graves in Potter’s Field. The Lawrence NAACP and local researchers led the effort, tying the memorial to broader work preserving Black history and seeking descendants who may still live in Lawrence.
