• As tornado approached Kansas town, they hid in a Bud Light cooler and cracked jokes (kansascity.com) — A powerful EF-2 tornado tore through four blocks of Ottawa destroying roofs and buildings but miraculously causing no deaths there or nearby. Residents in Hillsdale, including a gas station owner and local families, describe scrambling for shelter, riding out roaring winds, and emerging to find snapped power poles, scattered debris, and a blown-away pump canopy. 
• Spring Hill sanctuary founder grateful animals safe after close call with storms (kctv5.com) — A severe storm system that spawned tornadoes in Hillsdale and Ottawa narrowly spared the Always & Furever animal sanctuary in Spring Hill, where every animal survived despite major damage and power loss. Volunteers, foster families, and donors quickly stepped up with emergency placements, repairs, and funds for a generator to better protect animals during future extreme heat and outages.
