📰 News we're reading

1. Lexington advances zoning changes to implement growth plan

Lexington's Planning Commission Zoning Committee has advanced key ordinance changes to turn the 2024 Urban Growth Master Plan into enforceable rules for 2,800 newly added acres. The proposal sets objective standards for housing density, mixed-use projects, buffers, and several specific rezonings, including student housing on East High Street and new residential and industrial developments that could shape where and how Lexington grows next. 2. Lexington's 'Go See Trees' program underway

Lexington's Live Green Lexington program has launched its monthlong "Go See Trees" scavenger-hunt challenge, inviting residents to visit marked street and park trees around town for prizes and a raffle entry. You can pick up the booklet online or at Lexington Public Library branches, the Lexington Arts and Science Center, or the Lexington Senior Center and learn to recognize local trees as you explore. 3. Lexington plans snow and ice response overhaul after last winter

Lexington officials are rolling out a major overhaul of the city's snow and ice response, with more funding, equipment, drivers, and expanded pretreatment of neighborhood and downtown streets. The plan, expected October 13, also introduces "Plan B" school bus routes to keep Fayette County students in class during storms, while a mayoral challenger criticizes the timing and past responses. 4. Good Question: What are the cement barriers on Pepperhill Road?

If you drive Pepperhill Road in Lexington, those cement trapezoid boxes filled with dirt are intentional curb extensions meant to slow traffic near an elementary school and Lansdowne Merrick Park. City traffic engineers say these traffic-calming features narrow the roadway so drivers pay closer attention, joining other tools like speed humps and roundabouts to keep pedestrians safer. 5. Lexington food drive returns to support local families

Lexington is reviving its citywide "Lexington's Big Give" food drive, asking residents to donate unopened, non-perishable items or money to support God's Pantry Food Bank. You can give online or drop off food at locations around Lexington, including the police department and sheriff's office, helping families in Fayette County and across central and eastern Kentucky.
