📰 News we're reading

1. Advocates say I-65 work could displace more homeless residents (spectrumnews1.com) — Major I-65 bridge work in downtown Louisville is eliminating open spaces under overpasses where some homeless residents currently find shelter, raising concerns among advocates. Groups like VOCAL-KY say the new enclosed bridge designs could further displace people unless the city and state provide alternative options, while transportation officials emphasize cost savings and reduced maintenance as reasons for the changes.

2. USPS warns of Louisville mail delays as packages are rerouted to other processing centers (wave3.com) — If your mail or packages in Louisville are late, the Postal Service says it's because the Gardiner Lane processing center is handling extra volume from Evansville and rerouting items through other cities. Some customers report weeks-long delays and misrouted packages, but USPS expects operations to return to normal by Sunday, Sept. 20.

3. Louisville's independent monitor addresses first LMPD reform report before Metro Council (wave3.com) — Louisville's independent police monitor has delivered its first report on LMPD reforms to Metro Council, highlighting ongoing work on use of force, search warrants, fair policing, and mental health crisis response. The monitor says behavioral health calls need urgent attention and will keep reviewing policies, training, and real-world practices, with another public report due later this fall.

4. What happens to seized guns after prosecution in Kentucky? How state, federal cases differ (wlky.com) — Louisville police and federal prosecutors want Kentucky's gun laws changed after seizing nearly 200 firearms in recent local operations, many tied to other crimes. They're frustrated that guns from state cases can be auctioned back onto the streets and are urging lawmakers to revive a stalled bill banning Glock switches so local officers have stronger tools to keep illegal weapons off Louisville streets.
