📰 News we're reading

1. East Baton Rouge considers temporary housing waiver as hurricane season reaches peak (louisianafirstnews.com) — East Baton Rouge Parish leaders are weighing a temporary housing waiver that would let mobile homes and RVs be used after a federally declared disaster, giving Baton Rouge residents more options if their homes are damaged. The proposal, tied to Louisiana's expedited housing program, aims to speed recovery during peak hurricane season and reduce hardship from long power outages and displacement.

2. Top of the class (redeyebr.com) — Baton Rouge Magnet High School tops a new ranking of East Baton Rouge Parish high schools based on National Merit Semifinalists per junior student, edging out other well-known campuses. The list compares both per-capita rates and total semifinalists, giving parents and students a snapshot of how several local public and private schools stack up academically this year.

3. Rideshare drivers say LSU pickup zone leaves fans stranded after games (wafb.com) — Rideshare drivers in Baton Rouge say LSU's new Lot 406 pickup zone and postgame contraflow are leaving Tiger Stadium fans stranded, since cars can't re-enter campus once traffic is routed out. As LSU prepares for Saturday's game against Louisiana Tech, drivers are urging the university and state officials to create a dedicated access lane and better coordinate with Uber and Lyft.

4. Mid America Print Conference Juried Members Exhibition (lsu.edu) — An upcoming juried printmaking exhibition opens today at LSU's Clark and Laura Boyce Gallery in Baton Rouge, showcasing 52 works by artists from across the country. Running through October 10 with a closing reception on October 9, it offers locals a chance to see nationally competitive printmaking curated by Louisiana artist and curator Brandon V. Lewis.

5. From 9/11 to Katrina: Fire truck tells story of Louisiana, New York paying it forward (wafb.com) — A special fire truck at Louisiana's Fire and Emergency Training Academy in Baton Rouge honors how Louisiana helped New York after 9/11 and how New York later aided Louisiana after Katrina. The "Spirit of Louisiana" truck, funded by statewide donations, now serves as a teaching symbol of resilience, generosity, and the bond between the two communities.
