• 2 years after ‘red mud' escaped alumina refinery, LDEQ hasn't penalized company (kalb.com) — Residents in Gramercy are still living with unresolved “red mud” pollution from the Atalco alumina refinery, as state regulators negotiate penalties behind closed doors more than two years after leaks were first documented. A citizen lawsuit remains on hold while talks continue, even after inspectors recently found more discolored, alkaline waste in ditches draining toward Lake Maurepas and Blind River swamp.
