📰 News we're reading

• Maine firefighters discover groundhog was responsible for false fire alarm (bangordailynews.com) — Auburn firefighters recently rushed to a property when an alarm sounded, only to find no fire—just a bewildered groundhog that had apparently tripped the system. Crews safely removed the animal and jokingly “lectured” it on fire safety, while reminding residents that false alarms can be treated as crimes under state law.

• Hampden softball downs Edward Little in A North quarterfinal (sunjournal.com) — Auburn fans saw Edward Little’s softball season end Thursday with a 5-3 Class A North quarterfinal loss to Hampden Academy at Central Maine Community College. The Red Eddies rallied to tie it in the first inning, but Hampden’s early bats and late insurance run proved the difference, despite a 10-strikeout performance from pitcher Chloe LeBlanc.

• Portland unveils new pedestrian safety initiative (wmtw.com) — A new Maine Bureau of Highway Safety campaign will run this summer in Auburn, Portland, and Lewiston, urging drivers to slow down and watch for pedestrians in busy urban areas. Centered on education and awareness, the effort responds to rising fatal crashes and aims for “zero” pedestrian deaths by changing driver behavior on local streets.
