South Portland could have a permanent dog park at Wainwright (pressherald.com) — South Portland officials are exploring a permanent fenced dog park at Wainwright Recreation Complex, with design work and cost estimates to be folded into the broader Wainwright plan. A consultant could have a proposal ready for the 2028 budget, and councilors favor grants, donations, and sponsorships so the project doesn't rely heavily on local tax dollars.
   

2. South Portland schools end fiscal year in better financial shape than expected (pressherald.com) — South Portland's school district now expects to end fiscal year 2026 with a small surplus, likely avoiding a previously approved city loan of up to $2 million. After years of deficits, new financial controls, school closures, and staff cuts are stabilizing the budget, and school leaders will brief the City Council quarterly, with the next update scheduled for November 17.
   

3. Some South Portland residents seek a bigger park near Bug Light (pressherald.com) — South Portland residents are pushing to turn industrial land near Bug Light into an expanded Liberty Ship Memorial Park, and the City Council has given conceptual support while stopping short of committing funds. Advocates hope to protect shoreline, block dense residential development, and honor shipyard history, while others argue thoughtful development could boost the tax base and add housing and amenities.
   

4. York police to take down town's Flock license plate cameras (wgme.com) — South Portland residents may be interested to know that York is now following their lead by taking down its Flock license plate cameras, after South Portland removed its own in June. York's police chief is acting ahead of a November vote where residents will decide whether to permanently ban the surveillance technology.
