MD State Police To Increase Patrols Over Fourth Of July Weekend

Maryland State Police will increase patrols statewide over the Fourth of July weekend as part of an effort to crack down on impaired and dangerous driving.

The enhanced enforcement will run from Friday, July 3, through Sunday, July 5. Troopers assigned to the State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort, or SPIDRE, will also conduct targeted patrols to identify impaired drivers.

State police said the initiative is intended to reduce crashes, injuries and deaths associated with impaired and reckless driving. Troopers will also work with other law enforcement agencies on enforcement and public safety outreach.

Police urged anyone celebrating the holiday to designate a sober driver, use a taxi or ride-share service if they plan to drink and never allow an impaired person to get behind the wheel.

Motorists are also reminded to wear seat belts, avoid distracted driving and use only hands-free devices while driving.

Officials encouraged hosts serving alcohol to provide food and nonalcoholic beverages, arrange safe transportation options for guests and prevent anyone who is impaired from driving.

A portion of the enforcement effort is funded through the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration's Highway Safety Office.
