Seeking Police Chief: Annapolis Officials Announce Community Meetings, Survey

ANNAPOLIS, MD — The City of Annapolis wants to hear from residents about what they want in their next police chief.

Kicking up efforts to ensure the public has its input taken into consideration, city officials announced on Monday three community engagement sessions would be host this month.

The meetings are in addition to a survey that will be released Friday.

"The next police chief will play a critical role in shaping public safety, strengthening community trust, and leading the Annapolis Police Department into the future," said Mayor Jared Littmann in a release.

"We want this search to reflect the voices of the people we serve. Every resident, business owner, and stakeholder has valuable insight into the qualities they believe are most important in our next leader."

When Will The Meetings Happen?

The city is hoping the sessions outline the community's priorities and the characteristics they want in their next police chief.

Residents are urged to participate in at least one of the community sessions that will be held on the following days:

Location: Roger “Pip” Moyer Recreation Center (273 Hilltop Lane)

Date: Wednesday, July 15, 2026
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Location: Boys & Girls Club of Annapolis (121 S. Villa Ave.)

Date: Thursday, July 16, 2026
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Location: First Baptist Church of Annapolis (31 W. Washington St.)

What's The Backstory?

The city is functioning under an acting police chief following the dismissal of Police Chief Edward Jackson, who was removed from the position in February.

At the time, Annapolis Mayor Jared Littmann, fresh into his mayoral term, announced that he removed Jackson as police chief due to "differing approaches to management."

Capt. Amy Miguez has served as acting police chief since Jackson's removal.

It wasn't until June 18 that officials announced the establishment of a search committee to permanently fill the top police job. Still, it may be months before a candidate is nominated and selected by the 11-member panel.
