MD Delegate Hit With Assault Charge In Anne Arundel Co.: Court Docs

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Maryland Del. Gary Simmons is facing an assault charge after being involved in a "physical" dispute with a family member last week.

Court records show Simmons, who represents parts of northern Anne Arundel County in District 12B, was charged Thursday with second-degree assault.

The sole misdemeanor charge stems from a Tuesday incident in which Simmons asked his 27-year-old stepdaughter to move a car parked at his Brooklyn Park home.

The stepdaughter told police that after she jokingly rejected the request, Simmons "put his hands in her face" and later "grabbed her arm very tightly" when she attempted to push him away, according to the Maryland Daily Record.

The altercation, which wasn't reported to police until Wednesday around 11:30 p.m., ended with the pair separated by the stepdaughter's brother.

Filings show Simmons was not arrested for the incident, although he is required to appear for a hearing on Aug. 24 in Glen Burnie. A trial in the case is scheduled for Sept. 11.

Simmons, who was first elected into office in 2022, has not issued a statement in relation to the incident.

The delegate is on track to face off against Republican Blair Brannock for the District 12B seat in November.
