City of Baltimore: Kentucky Derby & Preakness (Week) USPTO (IP) Rights Like Nike & Jordan Brand
May 14, 2026 - The "Charm'tastic Mile" of Baltimore (CTMB-1.3) www.thecharmtasticmile.com. The chic & famed 1.3 mile corridor located in the heart of Charm City (Est.1975) that connects Dwtn-West, the Inner Harbor & Harbor East (S. Greene & W. Pratt Street to S. President & Fleet Street) that is now listed on Google search as one of the Top 10-15 Most Famous Streets in America is reporting It's Preakness Week '26.
The 151st Running of the Preakness Stakes is just 2-days away. The Intellectual Property (IP) for the historic Triple Crown race is now owned by Churchill Downs Inc (pending). This means all branding of The Preakness and its likeness is controlled by the company that runs the Kentucky Derby.
In an odd scenario could The Preakness be moved by Churchill Downs Inc. Taken to another city like the Baltimore Colts to Indianapolis in 1984. A brand new Pimlico Race Course at the cost of $400 million dollars couldn't guarantee The Preakness would be there every-year. The structure of the deal has CDI licensing the IP rights back to the State of Maryland for a fee.
This is the situation that could be at-hand when the IP rights USPTO www.uspto.gov of The Preakness is owned outside the State of Maryland.
The Churchill Downs Group could possibly market and brand both Triple Crown races like Nike www.nike.com & Jordan Brand. Two individual brands under the same company with seperate likeness. Some NBA teams feature the Nike swoosh on their jerseys, while others feature the Jordan Brand. The same goes for college basketball & football.
This could be the future of the Kentucky Derby & Preakness Stakes? The Baltimore Sun, yesterday reported that the State of Maryland would explore ownership of Preakness Brand for $85 Million, matching Churchill Downs Inc. offer.
The "Charm'tastic Mile" remains the only USPTO (R) registered trademarked street in the State of Maryland
