(CDI) & New York Racing Association (NYRA) announced yesterday a new six-race, five-month "Thoroughbred Championship Series" to start next year that would not include the 2nd leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes. The TCS would start with the Kentucky Derby, the 1st Saturday in May as usual, they would then by-pass the Preakness (two weeks later) and move-on to Belmont Stakes in June. There would be 3 other races at Churchill Downs, Belmont Park & Saratoga Race Course in July & August.
The 6th running would be the "Championship Race" run at Churchill Downs in September. This past July 30th (Baltimore's 297th Birthday) the State of Maryland finalized the IP (Intellectual Properties) for the USPTO www.uspto.gov rights to the Preakness Stakes for 85 million dollars. CDI had acquired the rights this past May. Gov. Wes Moore matched the 85 million to keep the rights in the State of Maryland.
Where does the Preakness go from here? The newly constructed Pimlico will be money wasted if the Preakness and its future is not included in the new "Thoroughbred Championship Series". The Triple Crown as we know it will be dead after 151-years. The Ravens, there's "No Purple Doubt" while the Preakness is In-Doubt.
