Baltimore City students return to classrooms as district targets attendance (cbsnews.com) — Students are back in Baltimore City classrooms, and new schools CEO Dr. Jermaine Dawson is zeroing in on attendance and achievement gaps. With city attendance still below state goals and low math and English proficiency rates, the district is ramping up family outreach, schedule changes, and support for teachers and principals to keep kids in class and learning.
   

2. Baltimore leaders fight youth tobacco use with new law Smoke... (afro.com) — Baltimore smoke shops will soon be barred from operating within 750 feet of city schools and parks under new legislation signed by Mayor Brandon Scott. Existing shops get two years to move or close, as the city aims to curb youth tobacco use while balancing business interests and public health enforcement.
   

3. Baltimore County school buses barred from Warren Road Bridge (wbaltv.com) — Baltimore County school buses are being rerouted off the Warren Road Bridge because of mounting safety concerns over deteriorating steel beams. The bridge, owned and maintained by Baltimore City, has a history of closures and is now at the center of a funding and ownership dispute that could lead to its full shutdown.
   

4. Mayor Scott visits 6 Baltimore schools on first day, awards Katherine Johnson Global Academy for attendance (wmar2news.com) — Baltimore City students are back in class, and Mayor Brandon Scott marked the first day by visiting six schools and honoring Katherine Johnson Global Academy for sharply reducing chronic absenteeism. The visit is part of his citywide attendance challenge, with trophies and mayoral visits rewarding schools that make the biggest gains.
   

5. 'It's not just a mural': New public art piece in Penn North raises awareness of 988 helpline (wmar2news.com) — A new mural in Baltimore's Penn North neighborhood is using bold imagery along Pennsylvania Avenue to spotlight the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Created with community input and backed by Behavioral Health System Baltimore, the artwork honors local history while encouraging residents—especially after last year's overdose crisis—to seek confidential, 24/7 mental health and substance use support.
