Homicide Suspect Dies Following Police Pursuit Into Harford Co.

FORESTVILLE, MD — A homicide suspect has died after a police pursuit unfolded Friday around 8 a.m. on Maryland Route 152.

The Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force notified Maryland State Police of a pursuit involving a homicide suspect on Interstate 95 in Baltimore County that continued into Harford County on Maryland Route 152. It ended near the gate at Aberdeen Proving Ground, according to the Maryland State Police.

When troopers arrived at the scene, the pursuit had ended. Emergency medical service personnel arrived at the scene and pronounced the driver dead.

The preliminary investigation indicates the driver died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No shots were fired by law enforcement.

The driver has been identified as Charles Glenroy Smellie Jr., 41, of Forestville. Smellie was the driver and sole occupant of a 2026 white BWM 330i. He has been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit arrived and took over the investigation. Officers learned that Smellie was a suspect involved in a homicide investigation in Prince George’s County, the state police stated.
