Scam Email Demanding Payment Circulating Around Bel Air

Bel Air officials warn residents and businesses that a fraudulent email is circulating, telling people to make payments via wire transfer.

BEL AIR, MD — Residents and businesses in Bel Air have been warned about fraudulent emails being sent that appear to be coming from an official Town of Bel Air email.

The emails request payments or inform the recipient to make a payment in a new format that currently isn't accepted by the town.

"The Town of Bel Air will never request payment by wire transfer," the community stated online. "At least one business has already suffered a financial loss from this scam, and we are aware of one additional attempt."

Anyone who receives a suspicious email claiming to be from the Town is advised to heed the following advice from officials:

  • Do not send money.
  • Do not click links or open attachments.
  • Do not reply to the email.
  • Verify the request by contacting the town directly using known, official contact information.
