3 Seriously Injured In 'Electrical Mishap' Near MoCo Metro Station

BETHESDA, MD — At least three workers were seriously injured Monday in an "electrical mishap" that occurred near the Medical Center Metro Station.

Pete Piringer, a spokesperson for the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, said the department was alerted around 7:45 a.m. to a "possible electrical explosion" near the Bethesda-area station.

The incident unfolded as the individuals were working inside an electrical shaft that Piringer described as a "fairly confined space" adjacent to the Metro station.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, which oversees the Metro system, said the workers were Metro contractors.

While the workers were removed from the area, three were hospitalized with serious injuries that included electrical burns.

Piringer said one of the individuals suffered a "significant shock."

Metro train schedules were not initially impacted by the incident, although service is presently single-tracking between the Grosvenor and Medical Center stations due to a track problem.

Initial reports said investigators were looking into reports of smoke outside of the Medical Center Station. Officials, however, have not specified whether the incident is directly related to the electrical mishap that was previously reported.
