Man Killed In Capital Beltway Hit-And-Run

An investigation is underway after a man was killed in a hit-and-run on the southbound lanes of Interstate 495.

CHEVY CHASE, MD — A man was killed late Thursday in a hit-and-run that occurred on the southbound lanes of Interstate 495.

Maryland State Police said the incident was reported just before 10 p.m. on the outer loop, east of Connecticut Avenue.

Early findings indicate the man, who has not been identified, was carrying a gas can when he exited a parked van on the left shoulder of the inner loop and tried to cross the southbound I-495 lanes.

Two cars hit the man while he was crossing the roadway, State Police said, adding that only the driver of the second car stayed on scene.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders with the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.

The first car was described as a silver or gray sedan that likely sustained "heavy front-end damage."

Officials said the incident forced lane closures for nearly six hours and involved the participation of State Police from the Rockville and College Park barracks, officials with the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration and officers with the Montgomery County Police Department.

The case remains under investigation. An autopsy report from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is pending.
