MoCo Creator Behind 'Blair Witch Project' Joins Reboot: Report

MONTGOMERY CO., MD — One of the local creators behind the 1999 horror hit, "The Blair Witch Project," is making a return to the world of the found-footage franchise, according to The Banner.

Eduardo Sánchez served as the co-creator and writer for the film, which went on to be widely successful. Made on a $60,000 budget, the film grossed some $250 million and changed the horror genre in the years that followed.

The film was largely filmed in the county's Seneca Creek State Park and the town of Burkittsville in neighboring Frederick County.

Sánchez, who attended Wheaton High School and later Montgomery College, is joining the new reboot effort by Lionsgate as an executive producer, The Banner reported.

"It’s cool that other people are still interested in continuing the story," he told the outlet. "It would be cool if they shot here, but I haven’t heard anything about where exactly they’re going to shoot."

But Sánchez isn't the only person from the original crew who will be joining the new film. Daniel Myrick, Gregg Hale, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams will also serve as executive producers.

Myrick, a Northern Virginia native, and Sánchez both created, wrote, and directed the original film.

The director behind the new effort is Dylan Clark.

The reboot announcement was previously made in 2024 at CinemaCon.
