Suburban Hospital Wins New Award For Sustainable Commuter Programs

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — Suburban Hospital in Bethesda was recently given an award for its contributions to creating sustainable commuting and telework programs for employees.

The Employer Award was issued to the hospital through the Commuter Connections program that operates under the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.

The not-for-profit community hospital stood out against competitors by implementing the following initiatives:

• Offering monthly subsidies for employees using public transit, carpool, vanpool, bike or walk to work.
• Free employee shuttle to the Bethesda Metro Station.
• Providing real-time arrival displays and a custom "Travel Smart Guide" for trip planning.
• Installing secure bicycle storage, shower rooms and lockers for more active commuter employees.
• Planning and promoting alternative commuting through quarterly events, hosting bike-to-work days and commuter competitions.

A release announcing the award detailed that Suburban Hospital in 2025 "helped reduce 519,000 single occupant vehicle employee miles traveled and saved 23,600 gallons of gas."

“At a time of volatile gas prices, this commitment not only helps their employees save money, but it also strengthens the region by reducing traffic congestion," said Daniel Sheehan, director of Commuter Connections.

Suburban Hospital serves both Montgomery County and the surrounding communities, employing some 2,200 individuals. The hospital can be found at 8600 Old Georgetown Road.
