Whitman HS Student Charged With Bringing Loaded Gun To Campus: Police

Andre Wilson, a 16-year-old Walt Whitman High School student, is being charged as an adult for bringing a loaded gun to school, police said.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — Andre Wilson, a 16-year-old student from Walt Whitman High School, is facing charges after bringing a loaded firearm to campus on Wednesday.

Montgomery County Police said Wilson was being charged as an adult in the case.

He is facing the following offenses:

  • Possession of a dangerous weapon on school property
  • Possession of a firearm by a minor
  • Illegal possession of ammunition
  • Carrying a handgun on person
  • Possession of a firearm with a serial number obliterated
  • Illegal possession of a regulated firearm
  • Loaded handgun on person

A release issued by the department said Wilson came on the department's radar after he was identified as one of the teenagers involved in a fight that broke out at Westfield Montgomery Mall shortly after 12 p.m.

The fight, police said, had involved students from two separate high schools. Police did not identify the second school linked to the incident.

During the altercation, one teenager was seen showing off a handgun. Wilson was identified after Community Engagement Officers were called to the mall.

After officials alerted Whitman Principal Gregory Miller and school security officials to what had happened, Wilson was located at the school and placed in a secure room.

A search of his backpack revealed a loaded 9mm Ruger handgun along with a firearm magazine.

Wilson is being held at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit.
