Family-Owned Spice Business Turns Up The Heat In MD With New Expansion

A family spice business that dates back to 1945 is growing its footprint in Baltimore County after seeing demand surge.

HALETHORPE, MD — A fourth-generation, family-owned business known for its seafood seasoning is growing its footprint in Baltimore County after a surge in demand.

Located at 3721 Old Georgetown Road, J.O. Spice Co. is now operating out of a space that covers more than 31,000 square feet in Halethorpe's Sulphur Spring Business Park.

The expansion marks the company's fourth since it first signed with Merritt Properties in the early 1990s, when it started in a space of less than 10,000 square feet.

"Merritt has been a tremendous partner to J.O. Spice," Tyler Ports, J.O. Spice's general manager, said in a release.

"Their responsiveness, flexibility and willingness to invest in our continued growth have allowed us to expand without leaving a location that has served our company well. We truly value the relationship we have built with Merritt and look forward to continuing that partnership for many years to come."

The spicemaker was first established in 1945 and has served the region as a distributor of a variety of spices, batters, seafood seasonings and soups, among other products.

The company's expansion also comes as the Maryland Department of Labor projects the state's food manufacturing industry to see significant growth over the next seven years.
