Train Derails Near College Park With 11 Passengers Aboard: WMATA

COLLEGE PARK, MD — An investigation by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority was launched over the weekend after a train derailment took place in Prince George's County.

WMATA, which owns and operates the Metro public transportation services, said Saturday that 11 people were aboard a train when it derailed.

No serious injuries were reported as a result of the incident. Prince George's County Fire and EMS said one person was taken to the hospital for an evaluation.

Authorities said the single train car incident took place just before noon outside the College Park station.

Photos shared from the scene offered an up-close view of the train off the rails.

"Preliminary investigation shows extreme heat as the cause of a rail heat kink that derailed the wheels of a 3000-series 6-car train," reads a statement issued by the transportation service.

"Crews will remove the train overnight to ensure the safety of our team and customers."

Following the incident, Metro announced it would be momentarily single-tracking between Hyattsville and College Park and reducing train speeds to 35 mph.
