MD Highway Worker Hospitalized After Car Crashes Into Work Zone: State Police
Maryland State Police said the crash involved two cars and that impairment may have been a contributing factor.
ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — A highway worker was hospitalized overnight after a rear-end collision sent a car into a work zone.
Maryland State Police said in a Wednesday release that the crash took place on the northbound lanes of Interstate 97 near state Route 32. Officials arrived at the scene around 12:45 a.m.
The drivers involved in the crash were identified as 47-year-old Javed Iqbal, of Baltimore, and Darrell Lamont Gough, a 62-year-old from Elkridge.

Iqbal was driving a Toyota Camry, whereas Gough was driving a Mercedes Model S, the release said.
Early findings from the scene indicate Iqbal began slowing down to adhere to the work zone-related lane closure on the highway when Gough rear-ended the Toyota.

The force of the collision, according to State Police, prompted Gough's vehicle to crash into the work zone area and strike both a 31-year-old highway worker and a portable light tower.
While an official cause for the crash has not been pinpointed, officials say impairment may have been a contributing factor.
The highway worker, who has not been identified by authorities, was taken to a local trauma center. Officials did not detail the extent of their injuries.
Authorities say charges are pending the outcome of the investigation, which is being led by the Maryland State Police Crash Team.
