Leaders Celebrate Motel's Transformation Into Older Adults' Apartments In Ellicott City
Officials and community leaders will gather Friday to celebrate the transformation of a decades-old motel into a senior living complex.
ELLICOTT CITY, MD — A longtime Ellicott City motel has been transformed into an 89-unit apartment complex for older adults. Leaders and officials will gather Friday to celebrate the development with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The former Brown's Motel, located at 8074 Baltimore National Pike, has been redeveloped into The Residences at Patapsco, a residential community designed for adults ages 55 and older.
Waverly Real Estate Group will host the grand opening ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Howard County Executive Calvin Ball is expected to attend, along with other officials and community and business leaders.

Brown's Motel operated along Baltimore National Pike for approximately six decades before closing. It sits near Patapsco Valley State Park.
In 2022, Howard County planning documents showed that SSM Hospitality LLC had proposed constructing 92 age-restricted apartments on the 2.6-acre property. The company had acquired the site in 2021 and sought changes to setback requirements to accommodate parking and the development's entrance.

The proposal drew opposition during public hearings before the Howard County Board of Appeals in late 2022 and early 2023. The board ultimately approved the requested zoning variances on March 31, 2023. The completed development contains 89 apartments, three fewer than originally proposed.
“We knew this property had the potential to become something meaningful for the community,” said Don Reuwer, president of Waverly Real Estate Group. “Seeing the former Brown's Motel site transformed into The Residences at Patapsco has been incredibly rewarding. We're proud to bring new housing for adults 55 and older to the Baltimore National Pike corridor and to give this longtime property a new purpose.”
The new apartment complex offers one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, with monthly rents currently advertised from $2,235 to $4,000, depending on the floor plan. Apartments range from approximately 887 to 1,477 square feet, according to online rental listings.
The development includes a fitness center, yoga room, resident gathering and party spaces, coffee room, dog wash station, walking trail and pond.
Residents also have access to nearby shopping, restaurants and recreational opportunities in Ellicott City and Patapsco Valley State Park.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will include tours of the apartment complex and its amenities, along with refreshments for attendees.
