📰 News we're reading

1. What will the admissions process look like for MCPS's new regional programs? (bethesdamagazine.com) — Montgomery Village eighth graders in MCPS will soon navigate a new regional "center" model to apply for high school programs like STEM, arts, medical, and IB through a ranked-choice lottery. Students can rank up to eight programs in their region, face two admissions rounds, and be evaluated on essays, grades, and test scores, with results stretching from January to March.

2. Councilmember Evans Introduces Legislation to Close Short-Term Rental Compliance Gaps and Protect County Revenue (montgomerycountymd.gov) — Montgomery County is moving to crack down on unlicensed short-term rentals, a change that would affect any Montgomery Village hosts using platforms like Airbnb or Vrbo. A new bill would force platforms to verify county rental licenses, block payments to unlicensed listings, and share annual occupancy data, with penalties for noncompliance. Supporters say it could recover up to $1 million yearly for county services.

3. County Council introduces tax credits for homeowners, teachers, families (mymcmedia.org) — Montgomery Village homeowners, MCPS employees, and low-income families could see new Montgomery County tax credits if three proposed bills pass this fall. The measures would expand the homeowners credit, add a property tax break for school staff, and create a child tax credit for very low-income parents, with public hearings set for October before any final votes.

4. Maryland offering $103M in grants for energy efficiency, electrification (facilitiesdive.com) — Maryland is offering $103 million in grants to help large buildings upgrade energy systems, a pot that Montgomery Village commercial owners, nonprofits, and schools may be able to tap. Projects like heat pump installations, insulation, and solar-plus-storage can earn sizable awards, especially for buildings covered by state or Montgomery County performance standards. Applications are due December 9.

5. Judge hands early victory to Montgomery County synagogue in gun law challenge (thedailyrecord.com) — A federal judge has temporarily blocked Montgomery County from enforcing its 100-yard gun buffer law against a Silver Spring synagogue and its rabbi, but left the rules in place for everyone else. For Montgomery Village residents, that means the county's restrictions near places of public assembly, including schools and many worship sites, still generally apply while multiple legal challenges continue in federal court.
